Becoming President in the post-Watergate, tough economic times, and the Iran-Iraq war made Jimmy Carter an easy target for his detractors. No former President has done more for humanity after leaving office: The Carter Center has been a vehicle for peace, human rights, and the eradication of deadly diseases; Habitant For Humanity has provided homes for many who couldn't ever dream of owning one; teaching at Emory and authoring a dozen books are just a few examples of a man who continues to give back to his country and fellow human beings. Even at 90, President Carter still teaches Sunday School while battling cancer.

It always seemed to me that Jimmy Carter had a difficult time getting things accomplished while in office because he was a Washington outsider. Yet in his memoir he never complained about what he wasn't able to push through. You get the feeling that he used his presidency as a stepping stone enabling him to do even greater things once he was out of office. I was surprised to learn how smart he is, and that he was able to master whatever he set his mind to do. It was also interesting to learn that he failed to share with Roselynn that he was planning to leave the service, and that he had decided to run for president. And yet those revelations made him seem all the more human.

Jimmy Carter has led a full life and, in my opinion, this is his best memoir, reflecting on his life at ninety years of age. Tho I have not always agreed with him, and did not vote for him, I have read some of his books and have admired the Carter Center and all the good work he has done after his presidency in many parts of the world. He served only a 4 year term as President and was wounded by losing the next election but he moved on and must be respected for his good works. I even read his long diary in which he penned his thoughts daily over those four years (as well as the diaries of other presidents that were published). In this book he tells us much more about his navy experience and education in nuclear submarines. Because he has opened up his thoughts and concerns about our nation and the world, learning from his short presidency, this book is worth reading. Everyone's life is a work in progress and Jimmy Carter continues to learn and share his life. Obviously, It is important to him that people remember him as a faithful Christian man who delights in simple pleasures (like fishing and hunting) and who wanted to become famous, not just as a peanut farmer or agricultural expert, but as president of our country in order to do great things and make a difference in the world. For some people he is a great man -- for others, a man who is mostly ignored. For me, he is an interesting man who writes well, keeps busy building homes for Habitat, employs many at the Carter Center, and really continues to make a difference. This book should be read by those who enjoy presidential memoirs.

This is an excellent memoir by President Jimmy Carter. It is a concise treatment of private and public lives that were and continue to be brimming with challenges and accomplishments. How many other presidents can we imagine doing the sheer physical labor in their youth that Carter did on the family farm? Maybe George Washington or Harry Truman, but few others. How many showed such insight into working with others of a different race as he did in the Deep South in his youth, or with different religions as he did in brokering peace between Egypt and Israel? What other President can we imagine being called on at age 27 to plan and execute a mission to secure and dissemble a nuclear reactor that had melted down at the Chalk River plant near Ottawa, Canada? Who brought a meaningful discussion of Civil Rights to the world stage? Who made sure the Panama Canal treaty did not turn into a full-blown guerrilla war? Carter's life should serve as a shining example of true moral leadership and courage is. Jimmy showed us the power of love and hope that should be a reference point for future presidents.

President Jimmy Carter has indeed led a full life. Although I found the writing style bland, I have to acknowledge Carter's dedication to living a purposeful life, or as Thoreau once wrote, "to suck the marrow out of life." Discovering Carter's incredible stamina is one of the hidden joys of reading this book. Whether one thinks his presidency as positive or not, the reader of this book comes away understanding the many ways Jimmy Carter's persona and life serve as a model for living with purpose.

This book revealed so many things about Jimmy Carter. Most would have no clue how intelligent, compassionate, driven, and humble former President Jimmy Carter is without reading it. I read it first and could hardly put it down; something I mentioned to my husband several times. When I finished I gave the book to him and he had the same sentiment. Regardless of your political views you will be truly be enlightened by reading its content. It is heartwarming and reveals some of his inner most thoughts I've not read about in his previous books. In my opinion it is a must read for young and old, Democrat and Republican, Christian and Atheist. Buy it because you will not be disappointed! Buy 2 or 3 copies because there'll be someone to whom you'll want to give it.

Jimmy Carter is a man who I think is a wonderful example of a person who has lived his life to the fullest in every aspect or phase of any human being. I voted for him, admired him, and blessed him to be the type of Christian we should all exemplify and emulate, but regretfully, most of all fall short of this benchmark. I have read several of his books and enjoyed them. However, this one, though quite readable, did not want me to rate it more than 4 stars. Well written, but it went over the events of his life in a manner which was somewhat repetitive of his earlier books. Perhaps because of myself reading his earlier books. But very readable for fans of President Carter-a man we should all look up and admire. UPER
